| The results from last month’s mayoral election clearly indicate that affordability, especially in housing, is the foremost concern for many New Yorkers. While we've consistently argued that rent freezes are ineffective, Compass' Leonard Steinberg has some suggestions of what CAN work!
1. Build more affordable options 2. Revise/simplify zoning and approvals 3. Speed up inspections 4. Provide better tax incentives to build more 5. Revise laws that don’t work to free up tens of thousands of vacant ‘ghost’ apartments 6. Increase construction labor supply, including smart visa programs 7. Incorporate more technology in the construction process 8. Reduce other consumer costs like childcare and healthcare 9. Remove all tariffs on construction supplies and materials 10. Identify government-owned land/buildings to help offset one of the biggest housing costs: the land. |
